You Broke Your New Year’s Organizing Resolution – Now What?
ByOrganizing Resolution
Was your goal and New Year’s resolution to get more organized in 2010? Are you frustrated because it is already March and you haven’t done anything yet? Or, did you attempt some steps only to have them not solve your disorganization problems?
Getting organized in the new year is one of the most popluar resolutions. Many of us want a fresh start – a better start. We want things to go better in the coming year. This is an admirable goal and, for some of us, a necessary one.
So, what can you do NOW?
Re-energizing Your Organizing Goals
Forgive Yourself: Getting organized is usually a much larger task than most people realize. Give yourself a break. You may not have realized all of the steps involved in getting organized.
Start Small: Pick one area to organize. Or pick a small area that can be successfully completed in a shorter time-frame. Examples would be: 2 drawers in a desk, the family “junk drawer”, 2 shelves in a cupboard or closet, etc. Work on that area only – do not move from place to place or another room. Move strategically around the space in a linear direction.
Have A Plan: Clearly define what is going to be needed to organize your first area of focus. To assist with this process I have included an Action Planning worksheet. At Clutter Free Organizing we frequently help our clients define their organizing action plan. This can often be done with a short telephone consultation. It allows them to know they will be successful because they have thought everything through!
Set Aside Enough Time: Most people underestimate the time it takes to accomplish organizing. If the area you are organizing is not one that you organize regularly, double or triple the amount of time that you estimate it will take. Do your planning appropriately to budget that amount of time (even if it has to be done over several days).
Get Help: Organizing is always harder with our own “stuff.” We may be able to organize others very easily but we get stumped in our own home or office. Get the assistance of someone who can help define the steps that will be needed, keep you on track, offer encouragement, provide perspective when making decisions. As a professional organizer we are trained to account for all aspects of organizing an project (time, space, resources needed, etc.). We can ask the right questions to keep you moving forward.
